La fiesta de San Antonio Abat

Hello again!

2023 already strated a few weeks ago and that means I am back in Spain! I went home to celebrate the holidays with my family and now I'm back in school.

I'm a bit sad that I missed the big fireworks in the week of New Year here, but that has been made up for! This Tuesday, we celebrated 'La fiesta de San Antonio Abat', the patron saint of Valencia. Every year about 100 small bonfires are lit throughout the city here in Alzira. There is also a big fire in the main square. As there has been a lot of wind in the last week, the bonfire was only lit on Friday. The whole square was filled, I think the entire city was there. It started with lots of fireworks (it's Spain, of course) and then the big bonfire.

The rest of the weekend there was music, parades and more fireworks. 

The fire was really impressive and is apparently even in the Guinness Book of Records as the world's biggest bonfire!

2023 is al een paar weken bezig en dat betekent dat ik terug ben in Spanje! Ik ging naar huis om de feestdagen te vieren met mijn familie en nu ben ik terug in de school.

Ik ben een beetje verdrietig dat ik het grote vuurwerk in de week van Nieuwjaar hier heb gemist, maar dat is goedgemaakt! Deze dinsdag vierden we 'La fiesta de San Antonio Abat', de beschermheilige van Valencia. Elk jaar worden hier in Alzira een honderdtal kleine vreugdevuren aangestoken doorheen de stad. Er is ook een groot vuur op het hoofdplein. Omdat er de laatste week veel wind is geweest, is het vreugdevuur pas vrijdag aangestoken. Het hele plein was gevuld, ik denk dat de hele stad er was. Het begon met veel vuurwerk (het is natuurlijk Spanje) en daarna het grote vreugdevuur.

De rest van het weekend was er muziek, optochten en nog meer vuurwerk. 

Het vuur was echt indrukwekkend en staat blijkbaar zelfs in het Guinness Book of Records als 's werelds grootste vreugdevuur!
